Summer Law Clerks

Our Legal Department is the equivalent of a mid-sized law firm, with specialists in employment, compliance, investments, litigation, and several insurance practice areas, including personal, commercial, and insurance coverage. As a Summer Law Clerk you will have the opportunity to work on pro-bono cases ranging from housing problems, to social security disability income benefits, to Fair Access to Education for special education clients, and more.

During the 10-to-12-week Summer Law Clerk Program, you will:
Activities include:
  • Research: Perform legal research through traditional and non-traditional legal resources.
  • Writing: Draft concise correspondence to answer legal questions and summarize findings.
  • Assistance and preparation: Assist attorneys in preparation for key client meetings, outside counsel calls, and presentations.
  • Advice and counseling: Formulate and provide practical and actionable legal advice for business clients.

Credit Strategies
CLO Equity Exposure – researching various types of private funds offered by CLO managers and comparing structures and returns relative to each other as well as the publicly traded CLO market. This will help inform our CLO equity investing strategy and drive alpha in the CLO portfolio of Credit Strategies.
For Research
The Investment Grade Rail sector research project focused on key fundamental credit underwriting factors, the drivers of financial performance, and end-market demand analysis related to domestic GDP trends. A fixed income relative value framework was incorporated to create a holistic investment recommendation at both the sector and individual credit levels, which was presented to senior management for formal portfolio implementation.
Senior Housing Project
In this project within the Real Estate group, the analyst conducts macro level analysis and studies senior housing demographic trends (the “silver tsunami”) to formulate a realistic, actionable thesis to be presented to the investment team. The end result is a presentation deck that provides insight into senior housing and skilled nursing, and would provide a basis for LMI’s investment strategy for health care real estate properties.
Container ABS
This project dug into the Container Lease Asset Backed Security sector, providing an investment recommendation based on fundamental and quantitative analysis. The analysis explored the relationship between economic drivers of global trade and the profitability of container leasing. The Container Lease ABS issuers, the structure of the securitizations, and market valuations were also assessed to provide an investment recommendation to portfolio managers at LMI.
