At Liberty Mutual, we foster an environment where employees can bring their full selves to work. Our commitment to diversity extends across many dimensions, including race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, military status, disability status and more.   

Creating a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace continues to be a priority. In 2020, we announced a multi-year plan to advance our commitment to DEI globally, driven by three pillars:  

  • Increase retention and representation of talent from all backgrounds  

  • Address barriers to equitable career experiences for all employees  

  • Strengthen inclusive mindsets and behaviors  

Implementing this plan is one way we focus on developing a high-performing and innovative workforce where people of all backgrounds can grow in their careers, foster stronger relationships with colleagues and deliver a superior customer experience.   

We are integrating DEI in our talent practices, systems and expectations of managers, providing the necessary skills and resources to create an inclusive environment for all. As part of this work, we have developed a framework for managers to be held accountable for promoting inclusion in the workplace. We are also investing in the identification, development and promotion of a robust and equitable pipeline of talent of all backgrounds.  

Our DEI strategy includes Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). ERGs bring employees together while strengthening our inclusive workplace, enhancing personal development and acting as a resource for our business to help meet our customers’ needs. In 2023, more than 16,000 employees in the U.S. engaged in over 228 ERG sponsored events. Learn more about our ERGs. 

Championing diversity from the top

Liberty Mutual is proud to be one of the first 175 companies to sign The CEO Action for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, a global effort to support more inclusive workplaces.

Employee Resource Groups — fostering an inclusive culture

Our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) bring employees of different backgrounds together while fostering an inclusive culture, enhancing personal development and acting as a resource to help us meet our customers’ needs.
Allies—or employees who support groups other than their own—are a critical component of each ERG. To make our community and business stronger, we encourage all employees to learn about groups they may be less familiar with.
Our growing community now includes seven ERGs with 56 chapters in 25 locations across the U.S.:

Dedicated to the Hispanic/Latinx Community, Amigos serves as a resource to connect, support and develop Liberty Mutual Insurance Group’s Hispanic/Latinx community.

Leading & Empowering Asian and Ally Professionals raises employee awareness about Asian cultural strengths and positive impacts in business.

Liberty Employees of African Descent and Allies fosters building, growing and learning together with ongoing support and professional development for employees of African descent and their allies.

Women make up 38% of Liberty’s board of directors.
Our Men as Allies initiative aims to boost awareness that Liberty men have a crucial role as allies in our DEI work across gender and other differences.
We developed the Inclusion in Action eLearning to build inclusive communication skills, that contains Telly Award-winning videos, and teaches 9 skills for communicating and collaborating across differences.
