Internships & co-ops

Internship: 11 weeks (Summer)
Co-Op: 6 month assignment (Fall and Spring)

Our intern and co-op TechStart programs provide an excellent opportunity to gain immersive, hands-on experience. During these assignments, you and your technical team will learn and apply valuable skills to real challenges in need of innovative solutions. Your work can have a positive impact on our organization and your future as successful interns are often offered full-time opportunities upon completion of their assignments.

During the TechStart Summer Internship Program, participants are exposed to a variety of sessions, highlighting Liberty Mutual’s inclusive culture and core values. Some of the key Internship Programming activities can be found below.

Entry-level opportunities

As a gateway into the Technology organization, our entry-level talent participates in a six-month TechStart Program. In this program, you’ll gain strong technical training as together we zero in on your desired career path and the skill-set you’ll need to succeed. Better yet, the program’s team environment and emphasis on Agile methodologies mean you’ll have the opportunity to build skills while networking with peers and building relationships that will span your career.

Program phases include:

Orientation & Training – Three days of orientation followed by four weeks of technical training
Team Assignment – A five-month team project undertaken with your peers

Upon successful completion of the program, you’ll be able to join one of our exciting Technology teams and gain exposure to emerging technologies within disciplines such as software engineering, cybersecurity, data, configuration, infrastructure, UI/UX.

The Workgrid Assistant

This award-winning TechStart project produced a chatbot designed to help employees get faster answers to commonly asked questions. The platform enables enterprises to deliver personalized and contextual information with a modern, unified experience, and eliminates the productivity burden of employees having to login to multiple applications to find information and manage tasks.

Internal Starter App

For this project, the TechStart team built three new applications for Liberty Mutual CI Developers. The first was a UI reference code library for Bootstrap 4 that shows users how to combine common components and colors for Liberty Mutual web development. The second was written in Spring Boot and allows the team to do more coding with less confusion. The third was written in Angular JS designed to teach others the specifics of Angular at Liberty.

DOORS Operational Reporting Migration

Here, the TechStart team was tasked with moving Liberty’s DevOps Operational Reporting System (DOORS) to React JS. First, they created a filterable and exportable artifact mapping grid. Next, they sourced information using Talend, and created Node services to optimize data loading speeds. DOORS now allows the team to report on project progress and helps us better understand the cost of cloud-computing throughout the organization.

During my first year and a half at Liberty, I’ve grown as a developer, a team member, and a leader. I helped create an application that reduced a 30+ minute quoting time to under 2 minutes using over 10 internal and external data feeds. I have done full stack web development using Spring and Angular, and one project involved machine learning and image recognition.
